The Permit Regulation mandates that permits shall be applied for and issued for all petroleum storage tank installations, removals or alterations. Guidance for applying and receiving a permit within municipalities falling in PTMAA jurisdiction follows. Contact the local fire department for construction in all other municipalities.

Most Permit Applications must be submitted with drawings that have been stamped by a registered engineering professional authorized to practice in Alberta.  The exception for engineered drawings is the Small Tank Application.  To qualify for use of the small tank application the following must apply:

  • individual tanks are not greater than 8,000 litres,
  • the total storage capacity of the installation does not exceed 20,000 litres,
  • the tank(s) are outdoors
  • all parts of the tank system are aboveground and visible to inspection

pdf You can download the Small Tank Permit Application Form (393 KB)  here.  The process for handling your small tank application is as follows:

  1. The PTMAA will acknowledge receipt of application and contact the applicant if it's apparent the Fire Code is not being followed in the construction planning.
  2. The applicant will be invoiced $275.00 for submission of the permit application.
  3. The permit shall be issued to the applicant if the application review is complete and development is compliant with the Fire Code, and payment for permit services is received.
  4. A proposed construction date must be provided on this form.  Unless by exception, construction must commence within 90 days of the Date of Issuance on the Permit.
  5. Upon completion, a pdf Verification of Compliance (31 KB)  (VC) and Registration Application shall be submitted to the PTMAA office.  The VC is confirmation that the project was completed as applied for.  Confirmation will be accepted from an engineer if one was used to design the project, a certified contractor assigned to the project, a 3rd party inspector, a PTMAA Safety Codes Officer or the tank owner.
  6. The PTMAA will review the information received for the Verification of Compliance and Registration.
  7. Submit a Petroleum Storage Tank Registration Application (available on this website under "Forms") if tank is 2,500 L, or greater.
  8. A PTMAA Safety Codes Officer will perform a physical inspection within one year of project completion.  Any deficiencies must be corrected within 30 days with evidence of correction submitted to the PTMAA. (Contractor invoice for work and/or digital photos sent to the PTMAA will be accepted).

Installing All Other Storage Tanks

Follow these instructions for the installation of storage tanks that do not meet the conditions of a "small tank installation" as outlined above.

  2. Applicant to email the PTMAA a PDF of construction drawings stamped by a registered engineering professional licensed to practice in the province of Alberta. Drawings should include details as listed on this website under Engineered Drawings for Petroleum Storage Tanks.
  3. An invoice for the applicable fees will be provided to the applicant (see fee schedule below).
  4. Engineered drawings will be reviewed and if development is compliant with the Fire Code and permit fees are paid, a permit will be issued.
  5. Unless by special request, construction must commence within 90 days of the Date of Issuance on the Permit.
  6. Upon completion, a Verification of Compliance (VC) shall be submitted to the PTMAA office.  The VC is confirmation that the project was completed as applied for.  Confirmation will be accepted from the engineer that designed the project, a certified contractor assigned to the project, a 3rd party inspector, a PTMAA Safety Codes Officer or the tank owner.
  7. Submit a Petroleum Storage Tank Registration Application (available on this website under "Forms") if tank is 2,500 L, or greater.
  8. The PTMAA will review the information received for the Verification of Compliance and Registration.
